VP Shunts

A shunt also can get infected, which can be very serious. It's important for families to follow the surgeon's instructions for when to call and when to go to the ER. They’ll check on the function of your VP shunt over time. Taking it when you first have pain is better than waiting for the pain to get worse. You’ll be given ice chips to eat after your surgery. You’ll start with a liquid diet and then you can start eating your normal foods again, as tolerated. Use your incentive spirometer 10 times every hour you’re awake. Ask you questions such as where you are and what time of day it is.

After 5 days, take a shower every day to clean your incision. If you have staples in your incision, it’s okay to get them wet. While you’re in the PACU, your pain will be managed with medications.

How Should We Prepare for a VP Shunt?

Knowing what your incision looks like will help you notice any changes later. Call your child’s neurosurgeon right away if your child has symptoms of shunt malfunction or shunt infection. A valve, which is connected to the catheter, is placed behind your child’s ear. When excess fluid puts pressure on the valve, it opens to drain the fluid to their abdomen, where it gets absorbed.
